An Iron Helmet can remove critical enemy hits, while Boots of Striding can help compensate for the Red Guard's low movement speed. This combo well with the card Shield Spikes, giving the player some additional damage and mitigation. Players can purchase Hide Armor at the start of the game, giving one Shield twice per long rest. Combined with its reliance on taking hits to deal damage, the Red Guard thrives using tank-themed items. The Red Guard best operates as the group's tank, as its attacks start fairly weak compared to damage-focused starting classes. Introduced in Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion, the first DLC released for the digital version of this exceptional tabletop game, the Red Guard is a sickle-wielding tank that can retaliate against foes while manipulating their position on the battlefield.
While not necessary for success in Gloomhaven, the brutal early game can be much easier for players that choose to bring a tank, with the new Red Guard being an exceptional choice for players to choose.
